Luxor sits on the site of ancient Thebes, capital of the New Kingdom pharaohs for five centuries and burial ground for sixty-three royal tombs cut into limestone cliffs across the Nile.
The city straddles both banks of the river: the East Bank holds Karnak Temple, a 247-acre complex of hypostyle halls, sacred lakes, and obelisks dedicated to the Theban triad, while the West Bank shelters the Valley of the Kings, the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. Cairo lies 670 kilometers north by road — a ten-hour drive — but a day trip to Luxor from Cairo by plane compresses the journey to ninety minutes each way, making sunrise arrivals and evening returns logistically feasible.
Karnak Temple began construction under Senusret I in the Middle Kingdom and grew continuously for two millennia, each pharaoh adding pylons, shrines, and processional avenues. The Great Hypostyle Hall spans 5,000 square meters and holds 134 sandstone columns, the tallest reaching twenty-one meters with capitals wide enough to hold fifty standing adults. Reliefs on the exterior walls chronicle Seti I's military campaigns in Syria and Ramesses II's Battle of Qadesh. Three kilometers south, Luxor Temple connects to Karnak via the Avenue of Sphinxes, a 2.7-kilometer ceremonial path recently excavated and reopened in 2021. The West Bank necropolis holds layered histories: KV62, Tutankhamun's tomb discovered intact by Howard Carter in 1922, remains the only royal burial found with its funerary equipment largely undisturbed. The tomb itself is small — four chambers totaling 110 square meters — but its painted walls depict the Amduat, the pharaoh's journey through the twelve hours of night. Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari rises in three colonnaded terraces against sheer cliffs, its painted reliefs documenting the expedition to Punt and the divine birth narrative that justified her twenty-two-year reign. Modern air tours allocate six to eight hours on the ground, sufficient for Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and one or two additional West Bank monuments before the afternoon return flight to Cairo.
